AWARDS FOR BOARD GAMES.

The 'About' and 'Home' buttons are the ONLY ones shown on this page.

Shortly before Christmas 2017, I was browsing in Waterstones, and noticed that a railway game had something I now know as a ‘Flash’ on its packaging.
This proclaimed: ‘Over 5 million copies sold.’ It also stated that the game had won: “Spiel des Jahres.” This is German for ‘Game of the Year.’

Further research has revealed that:

  1. The Copyright notice on the game is dated 2004. 5,000,000/13 = 384,615.38 = an average of 384,616 sales per year at £38 each!
  2. According to its website,“Spiel des Jahres.” was introduced to stimulate German industry, possibly explaining why many new games are of German origin.

The award is now recognised as the ‘Oscars for Board Games.’

The award website suggests that being nominated can increase sales by 10,000 copies, and winning the award can increase sales between 300,000 and half a million copies.

The website also states that there are now two additional awards:

  1. “Kinderspiel des Jahres.” Children’s Game of the Year.
  2. “Kennerspiel des Jahres” for games which appeal to serious gamers.

Could RAILRACE win Spiel des Jahres?
